The Kilgore Bulldogs used two 10-0 runs in the third period to defeat Athens 67-51 in a Class 3A Region II bi-district basketball on Tuesday at UT Tyler’s Herrington Patriot Center.
Kilgore (15-14) advances to area to meet Paris later this week. Athens ends its season at 19-16.
Athens trailed 26-21 at halftime and started on a 7-0 run out of the break with five points from Courtland Lyons and a basket by Ryan Jefferson to lead 28-26 with 5:15 left in the period.
The Bulldogs went on their first 10-point spurt with baskets by Alvin Davis, Kevrin Justice, Tre’ Conrod and two from Nick Orange to lead 36-26 around the two-minute mark of the third quarter .
The second spurt came thanks to Xavier Gaona’s four points and Orange sinking six points for 49-33 lead.
The closest the Hornets could get was eight on a 3-pointer by Anthony Sanders to the deficit to 49-41 at the seven-minute mark of the fourth period.
Kilgore was led in scoring by Orange with 17 points, while Hector Peralez and Tre’ Conrod with 12 points each.
The Hornets’ Sanders led all scorers with 21 points and Jefferson contributing 11 points.
