The Kerens Bobcats withstood a late Big Sandy Wildcat comeback attempt to prevail 70-62 in a Class 1A Division I bi-district boys basketball contest on Monday at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium.
Kerens (21-7) will now play Waco Meyer in the area round. The contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Buffalo.
The Bobcats led 52-35 with just over three minutes left in the third period after a Nate Betts 3-pointer.
The Wildcats rallied and pulled within four points, 66-62, with 1:34 left in the game on a Isaiah Johnson basket. Big Sandy then got a chance to slice the deficit even more, but Kerens’ Tobyus Thomas came up with a huge defensive play and the Bobcats sealed the victory.
Sophomore Betts led all scorers with 34 points and eight rebounds, while Thomas added 16 for the Bobcats.
Big Sandy (22-6) was led in scoring by Joshua Jackson with 28 points and Johnson with 21 and 11 rebounds.
Taurus Keppard contributed 10 points and six rebounds for the Wildcats.
