State champion Slocum leads way on TGCA All-State softball team

Slocum sophomore Jalyn Fletcher led her team to its first-ever state softball title and has been recognized by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, which selected Fletcher on its TGCA All-State Softball Team.

Fletcher produced an 11-0 record in the circle and batted .554 at the dish as she was also chosen as Class 1A state tournament MVP.

She is joined on the TGCA All-State Class 1A team by three more Slocum teammates. Senior Makayla Bickerstaff batted .474 for the Lady Mustangs and juniors Briley Evers (.481 average) and Jessi Ives (.500) all were selected to the all-state team.

Athletes were nominated by member coaches and the players were selected at the TGCA’s annual meeting during the state tournament. The head varsity coach of a team must be in good standing with the TGCA to be eligible to nominate for honors or receive honors themselves or their team members.

Named to the Class 2A all-state team were Martin’s Mill senior Grace Camacho and Grapeland Sandies’ Cadie Currie and Taylar Mullen.

Camacho dominated in the circle and at the plate for Martin’s Mill, producing an .868 average with three home runs and 25 runs scored. In the circle, she produced a one perfect game, had eight shutouts and produced 110 strikeouts.

Currie, a freshman, batted .415 with 10 doubles and 38 RBIs while senior Mullen finished with a .600 average to go with 54 hits and 43 runs scored.

In Class 3A, Harleton senior Randi Carol Phillips racked up 212 strikeouts and went 16-5 as she prepares to begin her softball career at Texas A&M.

In Class 4A, Carthage sophomore Taylor Willis went 23-7 in leading her team to the regional finals while posting a 1.64 ERA and 187 strikeouts.

She is joined on the 4A all-state squad by Pittsburg’s Kaycee Parker, Rusk’s Tatum Goff and Kristin Tugwell, and Van’s Morgan Benge.

Parker, a senior, batted .387 with five homers while also posting a 1.80 ERA and 204 strikeouts.

Goff, a sophomore struck out 225 batters to go with four home runs herself. Tugwell, a junior infielder, batted .437 with 11 stolen bases and 20 RBIs.

Benge, a junior, batted .429 for the Lady Vandals.
