Super Regional: UT Tyler vs. ETBU

There are a number of streaks and goals the UT Tyler softball team can achieve this weekend as an NCAA Division III Super Regional is scheduled for the Patriots’ Suddenlink Field.

The Patriots’ opponent in the best-of-three series is longtime rival East Texas Baptist University. The winner gets a berth in the NCAA Division III World Series which is scheduled for May 25-30 in Oklahoma City.

Game 1 is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday with Game 2 at 1 p.m. Saturday. If a third game is needed, it will be played about 4 p.m. Saturday.

UT Tyler is ranked No. 4 in the nation with ETBU No. 10. The Patriots are 3-1 against the Tigers this season.

The Patriots, coached by Mike Reed, are the defending national champions and are seeking their third consecutive trip to the College World Series and sixth overall berth.

The Tigers won the national title in 2010 and are coached by Janae Shirley.

The Patriots (42-4) advanced to the Super Regional by sweeping through the Tyler Regional last weekend with a 9-0 win over La Verne (California) on Friday and then 8-6 and 5-2 wins over No. 5 Texas Lutheran on Saturday.

ETBU (38-9) won its regional in Marshall with a 3-1 record. The Tigers defeated Whitworth (Washington) 3-1 in the first game before downing UT Dallas 5-3. After falling to Whitworth 3-1, ETBU won the final against the Washington squad 7-5.

The other Super Regionals are in Angola, Indiana (Trine vs. Wisconsin-Oshkosh), Amherst, New York (Amherst vs. Ramapo), Norfolk, Virginia (Virginia Wesleyan vs. Kean), Rochester, New York (St. John Fischer vs. SUNY Cortland), Williamstown, Massachusetts (Williams College vs. Babson), Lexington, Kentucky (Transylvania vs. Illinois Wesleyan) and Decorah, Iowa (St. Catherine vs. St. Thomas).

PATRIOT POINTS: Tickets are $10 (adults), $5 (students and senior Citizens) and children under 3 are admitted free. … The Patriots’ World Series berths have been in Montclair, New Jersey (2009), Salem, Virginia (2011, 2015, 2016) and Eau Claire, Wisconsin (2013).
