BULLARD - Maddie Anthony singled twice, tripled and drove in three runs to lead Brook Hill past Frisco Legacy Christian 7-4 Tuesday in their TAPPS 5A bi-district softball playoff at Schwab Field.

Brook Hill (21-7) advances to face Fort Worth Christian in the next round at a time and place still to be determined. Legacy Christian completed its season at 12-6.

The Lady Guard committed a season-high five errors with the Legacy Christian Lady Eagles also drawing five walks. Brook Hill was able to overcome it thanks to some timely pitches from sophomore Kasey Anderson, who stranded 10 base runners.

“Luckily we played as bad we did and we still pulled off a win,” said Guard coach Anthony Springer, who led the Lady Guard to the TAPPS 5A championship game a year ago.

“We will regroup and get better and try to come out (better) next time; definitely a lot of jitters and a lot of mistakes that we don’t normally make. It wasn’t one of her (Anderson’s) best games, but she did enough to battle back and keep fighting back.”

Legacy Christian senior Kristin Guzak took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with four walks and three strikeouts. She helped herself out at the plate with a two-run triple in the sixth inning.

Anderson went 3 for 4 with three singles and two runs scored. Anthony scored twice and stole a base. In the circle she allowed four runs, two of them earned, on six hits with eight strikeouts.

Anthony, the catcher for the Lady Guard, had the best view of her pitcher and defense. The junior catcher said this was Brook Hill’s off game and there cannot be any more.

“We definitely had a lot of errors that really challenged us,” Anthony said. “They did not let down, so that really helped us bear down and say, ‘Hey, we are better than these errors and better than this team.’”

Despite being mad at themselves afterward, Brook Hill never trailed in the game.

Anderson worked out of a two-out double in the first inning with the Lady Guard going in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Anderson singled and came home on a double from AD Kuechle.

The Lady Guard led 3-1 in the fourth when Brook Hill added three insurance runs. It began with Cassie Cannon reached on an error. She scored on a triple by Anthony. Anderson followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Alyssa Duplichain then bunted with Anthony beating the throw home. With Duplichain and Anderson on the corners, the two used a double steal to score Anderson for a 6-1 lead.

Legacy Christian cut the lead to 6-3 in the sixth on Guzak’s two-run triple.

Brook Hill scored once more in the sixth on an RBI single from Anthony.

The Lady Eagles were able to scratch out another run on a fielder’s choice RBI from Katie Fizer that scored courtesy runner Catherine Keyes, but Anderson got the next batter to line out to Micah Lovelady at first to end the game.
