Apaches blank Coastal Bend

James Kuykendall pitched eight shutout innings and Taylor Broadway and Jordan Trahan each belted home runs as No. 5 Tyler Junior College blanked Coastal Bend 3-0 on Thursday in a Region XIV baseball game at Mike Carter Field.

The teams continue their four-game series on Friday with doubleheader beginning at noon. The final game of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.

Kuykendall (9-3) struck out 12 and allowed four hits as the Apaches improved to 27-14 overall and 1-0 in Region XIV. J.P. Gorby pitched the ninth for his third save.

The Cougars fall to 23-19 and 0-1.

Trahan blasted his 11th homer of the season. With the Apaches on top 1-0 after Broadway’s solo homer in the fifth, Trahan gave TJC a cushion of 3-0 as he homered after Broadway doubled in the seventh.

Matt Mikusek had a double and a single for TJC, while Braden Wise added a two-bagger. Blaze Beason and Jarrod Wells contributed singles.

Charlie Overstreet led the Cougars with two hits, while Marcel Carter and Tres Luna each had singles.
