UT Tyler pitcher Chance Cotton has been named the American Southwest Conference East Division Co-Pitcher of the Week, the league office in Richardson announced. For the week, the Patriots were 3-1, winning a series with ASC West rival Mary Hardin-Baylor and defeating LeTourneau 4-1.
Cotton, a senior from Van, was 1-0 with a complete-game shutout of the Cru, striking out 11 batters in a 1-0 victory in Belton. In the impressive start, he also did not issue a walk.
For the year, Cotton is 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA, leading the team with 20.0 innings pitched, 24 strikeouts, while giving up only 13 hits.
The Patriots (7-3) return to play this weekend in the Clements Fluids Classic at Irwin Field on the UT Tyler campus. On Friday, the Patriots meet Austin College at 6 p.m., followed by two games on Saturday — 2 p.m. vs. Austin College and 5 p.m. vs. Whitworth. On Sunday, UT Tyler plays Whitworth at 10 a.m.
LeTourneau had a couple of Players of the Week.
Junior Bryce Griffin earned ASC East Hitter of the Week, while junior Curt Copeland shared ASC East Pitcher of the Week with Cotton.
Griffin, a shortstop from Corona, Calif., was 10-for-17 — including a five-hit game — with two doubles and three RBIs over a 3-1 week. The Yellowjackets swept a three-game series with Schreiner. Griffin was 5-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs scored in the final game against SU. He also had a 4-for-4 outing against the Mountaineers. He is currently leading the team with a .467 average and four doubles.
Copeland, a junior pitcher from Tyler, tossed nine shutout innings over two appearances, including a four-hit shutout with five strikeouts in a win over Schreiner. Copeland, who also hurled two perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts in a midweek game against UT Tyler, walked just one batter the entire week. He is currently 2-0 on the season with a 1.69 ERA.
Copeland, a three-year letterwinner at Park Vista High School in Florida, becomes the first Jacket to earn Pitcher of the Week since Garrett Methvin earned the honor on March 7th, 2011. This is the first time in LeTourneau baseball history that the Jackets have had both the Hitter and Pitcher of the Week.
