BELTON — Chance Cotton went nine scoreless innings, giving up four hits in a 1-0 UT Tyler win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday at Red Murff Field.
Cotton, a senior from Van, notched his second win of the season, improving his record to 2-1.
Scoring was at a premium in the pitcher’s duel, with the lone run of the game coming early in the third inning.
UT Tyler outfielder Chris Back led off the inning with a walk, followed by a stolen base. After a Jeff Kosta groundout moved Back to third base, Cayden Cunniff came to the plate.
Cunniff took a Kreece Cooper pitch to right field, deep enough to score Back on a sacrifice fly, giving the Patriots all the runs they would need.
Cotton did not allow a Cru runner to advance past second base while striking out 11.
The Cru led off their portion of the ninth with a base runner, but once again Cotton was able to get out of any trouble with a strikeout and flyout to end the game.
Cunniff finished the night going 2 for 2 with one RBI, while teammate T.J. Martin continued his hot start, going 1 for 3.
The Patriots (6-2) and Mary Hardin-Baylor (2-4) will play a doubleheader today beginning at 1 p.m.
