CARTHAGE â€” The Troup Lady Tigers captured first place in the Carthage Dawg Fight Softball Tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Tigers (6-0-1) defeated Beckville, ranked No. 5 in Class 1A, 5-2 in the championship game.
Troup finished 5-0-1 in the tourney. Also taking wins over Elysian Fields (3-0), Robert E. Lee (5-0), and twice over Linden-Kildare (2-1, 5-0). L-K is ranked No. 5 in Class 2A. The Lady Tigers tied Gilmer, 2-2.
The Lady Tigers hit four home runs during the tourney â€” three by senior Katelyn Standley and one by junior Caitlin Tomlin.
Pitcher Josee Ross, a sophomore, threw 40 innings, striking out 52 and allowing just five runs.
Standley earned an all-tournament medal, while Ross was awarded an all-tournament ball.
â€śThe girls had a bit of a slow start in the tournament, but improved each day,â€ť Troup coach Sam Weeks said. â€śSatuday was by far the best day of performance. I am very pleased with their work efforts and performance this weekend. We have a long season ahead of us and it looks very promising.â€ť
The Lady Tigers return to play on Tuesday, traveling to Carthage to meet the Lady Dawgs. They then participate in the Mesquite Tournament beginning Thursday.
