CARTHAGE — The Troup Lady Tigers captured first place in the Carthage Dawg Fight Softball Tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Tigers (6-0-1) defeated Beckville, ranked No. 5 in Class 1A, 5-2 in the championship game.

Troup finished 5-0-1 in the tourney. Also taking wins over Elysian Fields (3-0), Robert E. Lee (5-0), and twice over Linden-Kildare (2-1, 5-0). L-K is ranked No. 5 in Class 2A. The Lady Tigers tied Gilmer, 2-2.

The Lady Tigers hit four home runs during the tourney — three by senior Katelyn Standley and one by junior Caitlin Tomlin.

Pitcher Josee Ross, a sophomore, threw 40 innings, striking out 52 and allowing just five runs.

Standley earned an all-tournament medal, while Ross was awarded an all-tournament ball.

“The girls had a bit of a slow start in the tournament, but improved each day,” Troup coach Sam Weeks said. “Satuday was by far the best day of performance. I am very pleased with their work efforts and performance this weekend. We have a long season ahead of us and it looks very promising.”

The Lady Tigers return to play on Tuesday, traveling to Carthage to meet the Lady Dawgs. They then participate in the Mesquite Tournament beginning Thursday.
