Football: Athens 49, Brownsboro 42

BROWNSBORO - The Athens Hornets led the Brownsboro Bears for only eight seconds of the game, but it was the final seconds.

Nathan Sims dashed 21 yards for the winning touchdown with eight seconds left on the clock as the Hornets defeated the Bears, 49-42, at Bear Stadium.

Athens improves to 3-7 on the season and 2-4 in District 8-4A Division I play. The Bears fall to 5-5 and 2-4, but still advance to the playoffs.

The Bears are scheduled to play either Paris or Liberty-Eylau on Thursday at Pine Tree Stadium in Longview. The Hornets’ season is over.

The first half scoring for the Bears was Kevon Thompson scampering for touchdowns of 20 and 6 yards, while Saul Williams added a 5-yard blast. Luis Suarez kicked two extra points.

Nathan Sims ran six yards for a touchdown, and Jerquindon Taylor sprinted 36-yards for the other touchdown for the Hornets. Dakota Anderson made one PAT. The score at half was 20-13 in favor of the Bears.

The second half had the Bears’ Thompson scoring from six and 44 yards, plus adding a two-point conversion. Kenneth Woods scored from two yards out, and Suarez kicked two more extra points.

The Hornets had Xavious Fulton sprint 37 yards for a touchdown and caught an eighty-five yard scoring pass from Andrew McBride. McBride scored two touchdowns of 4 and 29 yards. Anderson kicked four PATs in the second half.
