New Summerfield girls win 3-point shooting fest
ARP β It rained almost all day, and it continued raining 3-pointers in the first half as New Summerfield eventually won a 54-45 Class 1A girls basketball bi-district game over Tenaha at John Mills Parker Gymnasium Tuesday.
A total of nine 3-pointers connected, while Tenahaβs Ashlee Ray had four in the first half and finished with a team-high 20 points. New Summerfield got four first-half treys from Ramie Weaver and took a 31-24 lead at halftime.
Maritzza Melendez led New Summerfield with 21 points, eight coming in the final quarter.
New Summerfield jumped out to a 10-3 lead early when Weaver swished the first of her four opening-half treys.
Simone Derrett of New Summerfield scored five of her 15 points in the third period as the Lady Hornets held a 44-35 cushion with one quarter to play.
The Lady Hornets sealed the game with eight free throws and a Melendez layup.
New Summerfield advanced to the area round to play Zavalla later in the week.
