Steers sweep Huston-Tillotson in hoops

The Texas College Steers succeeded at playing eight-ball.

Down to eight players due to injuries, the Steers secured their fourth straight win, with Jamal Robertson and Titus Stevenson combining for 48 points to lead Texas College to a 67-62 victory over Huston-Tillotson.

Robertson ripped the nets for a game-high 25 points to go with three steals. Stevenson supported the TC cause with 23 points and five rebounds off the bench.

Eddren McCain flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Steers (17-6, 11-5 in Red River Athletic Conference).

TC came out firing, using a 16-0 run to take a commanding 35-13 advantage late in the first half. Stevenson scored the first eight points of the run, and Robertson delivered the final eight, including a pair of treys.

The Steers upped their lead to as many as 24 points in the second half. The Rams responded with a 12-point outburst in a span of 2:32 to cut the Steers’ advantage to single digits (45-36). TC never led by double digits afterward, with the Rams trailing by only three (62-59) with less than a minute left.

Demetrius Smith, who led the Rams with 23 points and 20 rebounds, missed a potential game-tying 3-point attempt near the 30-second mark. The Steers secured the win at the free throw line, where Stevenson and Robertson teamed up to go 5 for 6 over the final 26 seconds.

The Steers, playing without starting pivot Kerry Jones and sharpshooter Blake Turner, overcame a height disadvantage inside, where the Rams ripped down 19 more boards. The Steers netted more points in the paint (28-26) nonetheless, thanks in large part to Stevenson, who missed the majority of TC’s recent four-game losing slide that preceded the current win-streak.

The Steers remain in the thick of the RRAC hierarchy, pulling even in wins with second-place LSU-Shreveport (11-3), and trailing third place St. Thomas (11-4) and Our Lady of the Lake (11-4) by a half-game.
