John Tyler and Whitehouse positioned themselves side-by-side heading into the first of two basketball doubleheaders between the Smith County neighbors tonight at the Lions Den.

The girls’ game gets under way at approximately 6:15 p.m., followed by the boys’ game at approximately 7:45 p.m.

The boys and girls’ contests pit teams with identical district records, with the Lions (7-12, 1-0) and Wildcats (17-5, 1-0) in a three-way tie for first place, and the Lady Lions (16-10, 1-2) and Ladycats (11-8, 1-2) in a three-way tie for fourth.

The Lions opened district play with a 28-point over Nacogdoches while the Wildcats won by 22 points over Corsicana.

The JT boys, playing at full strength for the first time all season, used a balanced effort for their largest win to date. The sextet of Jordan Caldwell (14 points, three steals), Isaac Warren (13 points, three steals), Greg Ward (12 points), Fred Ross (eight points, four assists), Tyus Bowser (seven points, eight rebounds) and Darion Flowers (five points, nine rebounds) led the way.

Jake Parker poured in 24 points and Patrick Mahomes netted 20 points to lead the Wildcats past Corsicana.

The No. 12 Jacksonville boys buckled down over the last three quarters to down Lindale 49-22 in the other district opener. The Indians, who host the Lions next Tuesday in Jacksonville, improved to 24-0 overall with the victory.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Lions hope to boune back from a 14-point loss to district co-leader Nacogdoches last Friday, while the Ladycats look to carry over momentum from their first district victory, a 16-point triumph over Corsicana.

Quaneshia Johnson (19 points) and Tiaka Lee (18 points) topped JT in scoring against Nacogdoches. Whitehouse received big games from Ashton Ates (16 points), Kenslie Dews (14 points) and Victoria Taylor (14 points) versus Corsicana.

The No. 14 Lindale Lady Eagles (19-4, 3-0) play host to Nacogdoches in a showdown for first place tonight. The Lindale-Nacogdoches boys follow. Jacksonville plays at Corsicana in the other district twinbill tonight.
