If at first you don’t succeed, try again.

In Robert E. Lee’s case Friday night, the Red Raiders tried and tried and tried — and ultimately succeeded with a 64-49 win over Rockwall-Heath at Varsity Gym.

Lee out-rebounded Heath 39-5, most of those coming on the offensive end.

Rockwall-Heath connected on nine 3-pointers and forced 23 Lee turnovers thanks to 14 steals, but the Red Raiders second-chance points enabled them to lead from start to finish.

“They are very young and undersized, so we just decided to take advantage of that,” said Lee senior Taylor Tankersley, who finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and three assists.

“They told us before the game that this team didn’t block out well and for us to crash the boards and that is what we did.”

Lee (16-7) moves to 3-2 in District 12-5A with the win while Rockwall-Heath (5-12, 0-4) remains winless in district.

The Red Raiders took control in the first period, outscoring Heath 17-8 in the final 3:28.

REL drained all three of its 3-pointers in that span, capped by a long-rage trey from Luke Derfus at the buzzer for a 22-10 lead.

“Our assistant coach (Antwon) Lounds said it best: our first (quarter) of basketball was impressive,” said Lee coach Alan Jonnston. “It was good team basketball; ball movement, finding guys and getting them open looks and crashing the glass.”

The rebounding discrepancy began to pay dividends for REL in the second quarter with Caleb Johnston and Tankersley providing consecutive tip-in baskets. Johnston then electrified Varsity Gym when the junior made a steal and went the other way for a one-handed stuff.

Another rebound led to a basket in the paint for Justin DeSalvo and a 35-20 halftime lead.

The Red Raiders shot an abysmal 5 of 16 in the third period, but it didn’t matter, thanks to five second-chance field goals off of offensive rebounds.

Christian Boone, finished with 12 points, then was fouled on a 3-pointer and made all three free throws to put REL ahead 50-35 with one quarter to play.

Rockwall-Heath’s constant full-court zone trapping defense helped the Hawks almost cut its deficit to single digits, thanks to Lee turnovers.

A steal and layup by Shawn Helms made it 60-49 with two minutes remaining, but Heath went cold from 3-point range after that with Lee securing its third district win.
