Mesquite Horn scored the game’s first eight points and maintained a comfortable advantage throughout in a 47-37 win Tuesday over Robert E. Lee in a District 12-5A girls basketball game at the REL Varsity Gymnasium.

Mesquite Horn was coming off a 45-point victory last week against Rockwall-Heath. This game was much closer as REL stayed within striking distance, but couldn’t catch the Lady Jaguars (16-6, 4-1).

“Our girls played with a lot of heart; they’re disappointed and I saw a lot of good things out there tonight,” said Lee coach Lloyd Mahaffey.

“I think that is one of the best, if not the best team in our district. We just have a few things that we can fix, but I am extremely proud of how hard they played. We’ll move forward from here.”

Lee junior Dominique Thomas and sophomore Tree Brooks finished with double figures in the loss. Thomas scored 11 points to go along with three steals and four rebounds while Brooks had 10 points, three rebounds and three assists. Senior Emem David led REL on the glass with nine rebounds.

The Lady Raiders (11-15) fall to 1-4 in 12-5A.

Horn was led by Lauren Bradshaw, a 6-1 junior post, who finished two blocks shy of a triple double. Bradshaw scored 13 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had eight blocks.

“I don’t think she fouled on (any) of those blocks,” Mahaffey said of Bradshaw. “When she’s altering shots like that (it’s tough). We made some adjustments, but as fast I made them she (countered).

“I had schemes to pull her away from the basket and as soon as we did, she noticed, dropped out of it and got back (in the paint) where she could dominate.”

Freshman Jada Underwood also filled up the stat sheet for Horn, finishing with a team-high 16 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Horn threatened to run away from Lee in the first half, building a 24-11 margin with five minutes to go in the second period.

The Lady Raiders fired back with their best surge of the night, a 9-0 run, capped by a step-back 3-pointer from Thomas.

“(Even when we were down) I told them to settle down and we are in this ball game,” Mahaffey said of the surge. “We just needed to go out and play sound defense (and they did).”

Thomas’ shot gave REL a little momentum, but Horn was in no mood for comebacks. The Lady Jags closed out the half on a 5-0 surge and maintained at least a nine-point advantage throughout the third period.

The Lady Jags drained clock on possessions in the fourth, never allowing REL to get closer than nine points.

This marks the fourth-straight district loss for Lee, but Mahaffey is not panicking.

“We are not statistically or logically in no way out of this season,” Mahaffey said. “We have to get some wins that are going to be critical and I believe we can do it. If I get the heart and fight that I got (in this loss); we are going to be fine.”

Lee will next face Rockwall-Heath at 7 p.m. on Friday.
