Longview clamps down on Lee in 55-36 win

The Longview Lobos double and triple-teamed Robert E. Lee’s leading scorer Taylor Tankersley and dared someone else to beat them.

Nobody did.

Tankersley finished with a season-low four points in a 55-36 loss Saturday afternoon at REL Varsity Gym.

The Lobos (12-10, 3-0) remained unbeaten in District 12-5A while REL (14-7) dropped to 1-2.

The Red Raiders received 14 points from junior Caleb Johnston as Lee attempted 28 3-pointers, making seven of them.

“They had a great defensive scheme and we’ve been wondering all year long what we were going to do when someone comes in and takes Tankersley away,” Lee coach Alan Johnston said. “We’ve got some kids who can shoot the ball; we just didn’t shoot it well tonight.”

Tankersley was coming off a 20-point effort in Lee’s loss Wednesday at Mesquite.

But the Lobos limited him to one shot attempt in the first half and the senior was scoreless entering the fourth period.

Tankersley got on the board with 4:38 to play with two free throws and added another basket late while also pulling down 10 rebounds.

“It’s not a secret what he can do and we didn’t want to let him get going,” said Longview coach Bill Goffney, who witnessed Tankersley torch Rockwall for 29 points in Lee’s district-opening win.

“We decided we were going to be physical on him; bump him and run him through. We wanted to make him work for everything he got.”

Longview had three players finish in double figures, led by Dorian Leonard’s 14 points and three blocks. Stephon Anthony and Dkeilan Lynch each scored 12 and the Lobos out-rebounded Lee 33-24.

The game was scoreless for the first 3:30 as both teams set a physical defensive tone.

Finally, Anthony made a steal and layup to break the scoreless deadlock.

Lee responded with a scoring drive from Tucker Boyd and the first of four 3-pointers by Caleb Johnston to lead 5-2 with 2:37 left in the first period.

Longview closed out the period on a 7-0 spurt and began the second with a jumper from Lynch to lead 11-5.

The Red Raiders used 3-pointers from Boyd and Johnston, but a 6-0 spurt by Longview to end the half made the score 24-12 at the break.

“Our kids at halftime in the locker room, typically the seniors will get up and clap and (try to get the other guys fired up),” coach Johnston said.

“I made pancakes for my family this morning and this locker room was flatter than of those pancakes.

“We got a little wrapped up (in how physical) the game was. We kept waiting for someone to make a play and our playmaker was being draped (with two and three guys).”

Lee tried to chip away at its deficit in the third period and pulled to within seven points, 35-28, on a 3-pointer by Johnston with 4:02 left.

Longview then finished the Red Raiders off, outscoring Lee 20-8 the rest of the way.
