Dale Jones swished a 3-pointer to give the Apaches the lead with 46 seconds remaining and floor general Anthony Odunsi was perfect in 11 tries at the free throw line as Tyler Junior College scored a 67-60 win over Blinn College on Saturday at Wagstaff Gymnasium.
In the first game, high-scoring Blinn stayed unbeaten with a 94-71 win over the Apache Ladies.
The Apaches led for almost the entire game until Blinn’s Marshall Bennett connected on a 3-pointer for a Buccaneers lead of 60-59 with 1:10 on the clock.
But that didn’t bother the Apaches as Jones hit the long three to get his team back on top, 62-60, and Trevor Berkeley followed with a steal.
TJC got the ball into Odunsi’s hands and he connected on two free throws to put the Apaches ahead 64-60 with 26.4 seconds left.
After a Bennett miss, Odunsi rebounded and was fouled. He drained his free throws again for a 66-60 lead with 15.2 seconds showing. Jones added a late free throw for the final of 67-60.
“We beat a good team that didn’t quit,” TJC coach Mike Marquis said. “(Donald) Moore had a big night for them; but to our kids’ credit at the end we made good decisions for the most part with the ball and we really rebounded well defensively.”
Odunsi led the Apaches with 21 points. Ta’Jon Welcome added 15. Jones pitched in 11.
Moore paced the Buccaneers, who are led by former Paris and Kilgore coach Scott Schumacher. Moore hit six 3-point attempts for 18 points. Bennett added 12.
TJC hits the road again, traveling to Beeville to meet Coastal Bend College on Wednesday. The Apaches return home on Jan. 12 to meet San Jacinto Central in a 4 p.m. game.
The Apache Ladies (7-8, 0-2 Region XIV) are short-handed after injuries and suspensions left the team with just eight available players.
The No. 14 Lady Buccaneers (15-0, 2-0) took full advantage with their running style.
Five Blinn players scored in double figures, led by Fatima Adams’ 22 points. Other top scorers for the Lady Bucs were Jazzmin Parker (14), Audrisa Harrison (13), Aarika Reyna (11) and Danielle Espinoza (10).
Blinn had six old fashion three-point opportunities, converting five.
Kim Munzo and Sernise Robertson each hit for 19 points for the Apache Ladies.
TJC returns to play on Jan. 12, facing San Jacinto-North at Wagstaff. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
