UT Tyler hoped to continue its winning streaks into the new year, but Concordia-Texas had other ideas.

In a couple of tight and physical contests, the visitors from Austin pulled off an American Southwest Conference basketball doubleheader sweep at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriot men’s six-game win streak was halted by the Tornados, 79-71.

In the first game, the Patriot women saw their seven-game win streak snapped in overtime in a 66-63 loss.

Both Patriot squads get back into action on Saturday, hosting another ASC West foe in Mary Hardin-Baylor. The women play at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m.

Following Saturday’s contests the Patriots hit the road for three straight dates — Thursday at Ozarks, Jan. 12 at UT-Dallas and Jan. 15 at East Texas Baptist.

Men

The Patriots played stellar defense, holding Concordia to 16 points below their scoring average of 95.3 points.

Poor free throwing (23 of 36) and turnovers (20) doomed the Patriots (10-2, 5-1 ASC) of continuing their winning ways.

The Tornados (9-2, 5-1) did not take the lead in the second half until 4:40 left, 67-66, on a tip by Brett McMetrotion. From there Concordia applied the pressure and made its free throws.

Four Patriots scored in double figures, led by Jordan Cannon with 15 points. Nathan Harbour, Joe Stephens and Darren Houliston added 13 points apiece.

Houliston led with seven rebounds, while Travis Dykman, Harbour and Stephens had five boards each.

Dwayne Patterson led the Tornados with 17 points and 12 boards. Josh Sanchez had 14 points, while Terry Corprew had 11 points.

The Tornados were sporting their neon yellow Oregon Ducks-style uniforms.

Women

It appeared the Patriots were headed to their eighth-straight win, but a fifth foul by Teylor Seals and a late dry spell contributed to the loss.

UT Tyler (8-4, 3-3 ASC) had as much as an 11-point lead in the second half and a 51-41 advantage with just under 10 minutes to play on a Seals jumper. However, the Tornados outscored the Patriots 14-4 down the stretch to force OT. Brianna Smith’s jumper tied the game at 55-55 with 29 seconds on the clock.

Seals, who led the Patriots with 15 points, fouled out with 4:18 to go.

Concordia (6-6, 3-3) jetted out to a six-point lead in the extra period. Twice the Patriots got within two — 63-61 on Lauren Glasco’s bucket with 1:03 to go and 65-63 on Breann McMilllan’s jumper with 12 seconds left. However, Paige Parrish’s free throw iced the game for the Tornados.

Along with Seals, Glasco (12 points), She’Cara Humphrey (11) and Brittany King (10) were in double figures for the Patriots. King had a double-double with 10 rebounds to go along with her 10 points.

Parrish, a former UT Tyler player, led the Tornados with 23 points. Domonique Liddell added 16 points and Madison Kramr added 13.

The Patriots led in rebounds 41-28 and had just 11 turnovers to 19 for Concordia.

PATRIOT POINTS — For the first time in school history the Patriot men’s team garnered votes in the D3 Top 25 national poll. The Concordia men were coming off a win over No. 5 Wisconsin-Stevens.
