Gorman, Liberty-Eylau set for Macy Chenevert Tournament final
Another tournament final, another shot at redemption.
Bishop Gorman took down Lindale 66-46 in the Macy Chenevert Patriot Holiday Tournament to set up a rematch in the final with Liberty-Eylau, which defeated John Tyler 60-53 in the other semifinal Friday at UT Tyler’s Herrington Patriot Center.
The Lady Crusaders (17-2) avenged their first loss by beating Martins Mill in the final of the Great East Texas Shootout. They can avenge their second loss today.
The championship game is slated for 2:30 p.m. today. Mineola will play Hallsville in the consolation final at 1 p.m. The third-place and fifth-place games were called off due to district foes slated to face each other: John Tyler and Lindale for third and Robert E. Lee and Longview for fifth.
Michelle Obach poured in 25 points to go with four steals and three assists to lead Gorman over Lindale. She missed her first four shots before making eight of her next 10, including three despite contact that sent her to the line.
Gorman senior Susannah Williams equaled Lindale’s eight points in the first quarter while Brooke Lee did the same with 11 points to the Lady Eagles’ 11 in the second quarter.
The Lady Crusaders opened on a 9-2 run and after the Lady Eagles cut to within 9-8, Gorman scored the next eight points and later had a 13-3 run in the second to take control.
Natasha Malone had 13 points and 12 boards to lead Lindale (15-4), which was outscored in every quarter. After pulling within 53-44 with 5:15 to play, the Lady Eagles scored just one more bucket the rest of the way.
Lindale committed 24 turnovers compared to 12 for Gorman.
The Lady Crusaders had four players in double figures, including Williams (15), Lee (13) and Danielle Smith (12).
In the second semifinal, Baylor signee Imani Wright scored a game-high 25 points adding 12 rebounds to pull the Lady Leopards (13-3) past the Lady Lions in a fierce, back-and-forth affair.
Tiaka Lee paced the Lady Lions (14-7) with 19 points while Amia Wickware had a game-high 14 rebounds.
Liberty-Eylau trailed 49-47 after Lee scored the first six points of the fourth quarter, but John Tyler did not hit another field goal the rest of the night, only adding a pair of free throws late in the game after a 13-0 run by the Lady Leopards, sparked by a pair of jumpers from Wright, the second she finished with a three-point play.
Liberty-Eylau took an 11-2 lead early in the first quarter, only for that lead to shrink to 14-13 by the end of the frame.
John Tyler opened up a 28-16 lead after a 24-4 run, only to see that lead evaporate. Alize Peague hit a 3-pointer before the buzzer for L-E to send the game into halftime tied at 32.
