Friday Hoops Roundup: Kilgore girls edge by Bullard
BULLARD — The football District of Doom is done for the year, and two league teams opened up the district basketball race with Kilgore taking a 59-49 win over Bullard at Panther Gymnasium on Friday night.
The Lady Panthers picked up their second district win with a 39-36 victory behind nine points each from Bridgette Taylor and Lexi Kirgan.
Nick Orange came up big for the Bulldogs, scoring 18 points in the Kilgore win.
The two boys’ teams will take a break before playing in the Wagstaff Holiday Classic at Tyler Junior College.
Girls
Bullard held a 27-19 advantage at the break, and maintained a six to eight-point cushion until a Kilgore run at the end of the game made it interesting.
Kilgore’s Annie Mehringer nailed three treys in the game to lead all scorers with 14 points. Tony Burks and Destiny Rossum added nine and eight points, respectively, for Kilgore.
Taylor and Kirgan paced the Lady Panther attack with Kirgan coming on strong early on, and Taylor knocking down a second quarter three-pointer and a 24-17 lead before the break.
Boys
The game started out with both teams fighting back-and-forth with five ties and three lead changes in the opening quarter alone.
Orange scored eight points in the second quarter to turnaround the score to help Kilgore to a 21-19 halftime lead.
Bullard came out cold and went three minutes and five seconds without a second half bucket. Meanwhile Kilgore stretched the lead to 31-19 after back-to-back treys by Alvin Davis.
Orange and company owned the paint in the final half of play for Kilgore.
Korbin Howard led the Panthers in scoring 16 points and post man Scott Lowrie added 13 points and eight rebounds in the setback.
