Steers drop first RRAC game


SAN ANTONIO — A visit near the River Walk cost Texas College its perfect record in the Red River Athletic Conference.

Our Lady of the Lake handed Texas College its first loss in RRAC action, beating the Steers 88-80 on Monday night.

The outcome created a tie in the loss column between Texas College (12-2 7-1 in RRAC) and Our Lady of the Lake (6-5, 5-1 in RRAC).

Kerry Jones led the Steers with 19 points and seven rebounds. Eddren McCain added a double-double (10 points, 12 assists) and Wendell Maye (17 points) and Jamal Robertson (12 points) both reached double figures for the Steers.

The Saints, who opened the season ranked No. 7 in the NAIA, used a game-high 27 points from Robert Martinez to stop the 24th-ranked Steers’ win streak at 10 games.

Our Lady of the Lake eased to a 113-63 win over Texas College in the women’s game.

Keyara Criner led the Lady Steers (2-12, 1-7) with 19 points and nine rebounds.

The Steers and Lady Steers will take a near three-week hiatus from the court before returning to the hardwood on Jan. 5 to play host to Paul Quinn.
