Gorman girls top Martins Mill to claim GETSO title

Published on Sunday, 9 December 2012 00:22 - Written by Shane Stark

BROWNSBORO — Bishop Gorman coach Katie Robertson experienced quite the homecoming Saturday. The Brownsboro native guided the Lady Crusaders to one of the area’s most heralded regular-season crowns.

Robertson’s squad took a commanding third-quarter lead and held on down the stretch to upset Martins Mill, 54-48, in the Great East Texas Shootout girls championship game at Brownsboro High School.

The resounding victory came against the UIL top-ranked Class 1A Division I team, which handed Gorman a 69-56 defeat less than a month ago.

“That win was (special) for me personally because it was my hometown and on my homecourt,” Robertson said. “I had a lot of people there that watched me play and so many said that at all times it was like watching five Katies on the floor, because they played so hard and played with heart.”

Michelle Obach scored 23 points and Brooke Lee added 14 to lead the Lady Crusaders, who improved to 13-2 after reaching the TAPPS Class 4A state semifinals last season. Obach gave the Lady Mustangs (13-1) fits throughout the game, using her quickness to drive the lane and draw fouls (8 of 10 at the line).

Cheyenne Brown scored 25 points and Haily Jenkins added 13 to lead two-time defending tourney champ Martins Mill, which struggled with interior baskets throughout the first three quarters before finally getting things together in the fourth.

Gorman used an 11-1 run to build a 15-point lead during the final minute of the third, but Jenkins nailed a 3-pointer with time running out to give the Lady Mustangs new life entering the final period. That’s when Martins Mills began to play like its normal self, using a frantic style and pace to score the first nine points of the frame to pull within 40-37 with 6:53 remaining.

The Lady Mustangs took the lead with 1:31 to go, but Obach scored to put Gorman up for good with 0:58 remaining and then the Lady Crusaders closed the game out from the line.

“I’m very proud,” Robertson said. “It was an awesome game. I told the girls ‘start unknown and finish unforgettable.’ They are making a name for themselves.”

BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP

Crandall outscored Bullard 46-17 in the second half to run away with the boys title with a 71-34 victory in the final game of the tournament.

The Pirates led 25-17 at the break but then blew the game wide open in the third quarter to take a 49-25 advantage into the fourth.

Isaac Russell finished with a game-high 19 points to lead Crandall, which also got double-figures scoring performances from Nathan Kirbie (14 points), Ryan Long (12 points) and Tanner Dykman (11 points).

Bullard was paced by Scott Lowrie, who finished with nine points.
