SEGUIN â€” For the first time in program history, the UT Tyler menâ€™s basketball team is 4-0.
Darren Houliston sanked two free throws with 1.67 seconds left to break the tie and lead the Patriots to a 63-60 win over Texas Lutheran at Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday in an American Southwest Conference game.
In the womenâ€™s game, Sheâ€™Cara Humphrey and Taylor Murphy combined for 31 points to lead the Patriots to a 60-54 win over TLU.
With the game tied 60-60, Houliston took a Tre Potter pass and was fouled. After making the free throws for a 62-60 lead, the Bulldogs turned the ball over and Travis Dykman made one of two free throw attempts for the final score.
UT Tyler (4-0, 3-0) was led by Tre Potterâ€™s 16 points and seven rebounds. Houliston added 15 points and eight rebounds. Dykman pitched in 13.
â€śThese guys are tough, and they just played in a war against Texas Lutheran,â€ť Patriot coach Kenny Bizot said. â€śWe talked a lot this week about what it would mean to start 4-0 this season, and now we have done that.â€ť
Texas Lutheran (2-4, 1-1) was led by Brendan Holderreadâ€™s 15 points.
The Patriots meet Division I opponent McNeese State on Monday in Lake Charles, La. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m.
Humphrey scored 16 and grabbed six rebounds to pace the win. Murphy added 1 points. Teylor Seals contributed nine points and six boards as the Patriots improved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.
TLU (1-5, 0-2) was led by Katy Scottâ€™s 18 points and eight rebounds.
UT Tyler returns home on Thursday to face Jarvis Christian College. The women play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
