At It Again: Gorman girls win fifth straight Brookshire Classic
It may be All Saints’ tournament, but the Bishop Gorman Lady Crusaders own the Bruce G. Brookshire Basketball Classic.
For the fifth time in five years, Gorman won the girls bracket, once again led by Michelle Obach, who was selected to the all-tournament team for the third time.
Obach poured in 17 points while supplying five assists, two steals and four rebounds as the Lady Crusaders held off a relentless Austin Brentwood 54-43 on Saturday at Bruce G. Brookshire Family Student Athletic Center.
In the boys final, All Saints was unable to repeat as champs, falling 62-46 to first-timers Corsicana.

After defeating their first two opponents in the tournament by a combined 140-51, the Lady Crusaders (8-2) had to fight to the end against the Lady Bears (9-2).
Gorman led 10-2 late in the first quarter and by as many as 18 in the third quarter. The Lady Crusaders used a 7-0 burst to start the second half to build a lead that stayed in double digits for the rest of the game after going into the break with a 30-20 cushion.
Brentwood sliced its deficit to as little as 11 in the fourth quarter, sticking around thanks to 16 points from Nicole Glenn and 13 from Ariana Marks.
“I told them coming into this game and this tournament, they’re not just going to give it to us because we won it in the past, you’re going to have to earn it,” said Gorman coach Katie Robertson, who is undefeated at Brookshire Gym.
Brooke Lee scored 15 points while shooting 3 for 4 from long range and Danielle Smith, whose sister Brie helped start the five-year tournament streak, added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Crusaders. Allie Buzbee chipped in four assists.
Corsicana 62, All Saints 46
Given Corsicana’s recent basketball history, there was understandable excitement from the players as the players lifted their first ever trophy.
Dzifa Mallet recorded 17 points, 15 rebounds and six steals, Mike Lewis scored 17 and the Tigers (7-1) shot 50 percent for the game en route to the 16-point win.
“I’ve got a bunch of good young guys that are working hard,” third-year Corsicana coach Don Newton said.
The Tigers were a late addition to the Brookshire Classic after being shut out of the Mabank Tournament, said Newton, who took over a team that went winless the year before he arrived and has now won seven straight games.
After shooting poorly from long range in its first two games (five total 3-pointers), Corsicana connected on nine on Saturday, including 5 of 10 in the first half. Tim Lang led the way with three treys.
“We finally relaxed and shot the basketball,” Newton said. “That was the key.”
Jaired Maddox and Aston Francis paced All Saints (8-4) with 11 points each. Francis added six rebounds and five steals, but the team’s leading scorer connected on 5 of 22 shots from the field as the Tigers’ length hampered the Trojans’ ball movement, forcing 18 turnovers.
Corsicana shot out to an 8-0 lead until an 11-0 run gave All Saints its only lead at 12-11. A bucket from Ernest McGee put the Tigers back on top and they slowly took control of the game.
Grace Community 70, Ovilla Christian 63
Sluggish in the first half of the third-place game, Cougars coach Neal Welch had just the answer: half-time sprints.
Welch put Grace Community through a rigorous workout in between halves and the Cougars woke up, tying a tournament record with 31 points in the third quarter on the way to a 70-63 victory over Ovilla Christian.
“I think we were still kind of hung over from the Corsicana loss,” Welch said, referring to a 63-54 defeat the night before. “It took us a whole half to decide we wanted to play.
“I decided we needed to do some sprints at halftime and get focused and ready to play.”
The Cougars (6-2) built a 60-39 lead entering the fourth quarter and consecutive 3-pointers from Nic Negem put them up 68-41 with 6:21 left. With backups in the game, Ovilla’s starters came charging back, getting to within 69-61 with 24 seconds remaining before the Grace starters returned to close out the game.
Verlo Levels scored 10 of his 18 points in the third, adding eight rebounds, five steals and two blocks for the Cougars. Blake Johnson chipped in 15 points.
Griffin Glenn and Micah Murphy led the Eagles with 17 points apiece.
