Texas College created a huge splash, opening up league play with an 82-69 springboard win over defending Red River Athletic Conference postseason champion LSU-Shreveport on Thursday night.

Kerry Jones looked right at home in his native hometown at Gus F. Taylor Gymnasium, and around the paint, finishing with a team-best 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the Steers.

Five Steers scored in double figures, including senior guard Wendell Maye, who charted 14 points and six steals to key a valiant defensive effort.

LSU-Shreveport reached the NAIA national quarterfinals last year, ending TC’s season with a buzzer-beater in a three-point win over the Steers in the RRAC tournament.

“It was a big win for us,” Texas College coach Marquet Norfleet said. “Any time you beat a team of their caliber it’s big. We’re trying to stay in the hunt. Being the first game, we wanted to play well.”

The Steers stifled a team entering the game third nationally in points per game, forcing the Pilots into 24 turnovers.

LSU-Shreveport guard Rodney Milum, the nation’s leading scorer at more than 30 points per game, finished with 14. Milum missed all six attempts from beyond the arc. LSU-Shreveport shot 18 percent from 3-point territory for the night.

“A lot of teams zoned him a lot,” Norfleet said of the strategy on Milum, who saw a handful of defenders check him. “A kid with that capability, we switched it up a lot. We wanted to make it hard for him and run fresh bodies into him every time.”

TC never trailed after Jones, a Robert E. Lee graduate, tipped in a ball for the game’s opening bucket.

Norman Stewart netted 14 points, scoring a three-point play late in the first half, and opening the second half with a trey to give TC its largest lead of the night (41-22).

Stewart swished six straight points off three long jumpers, the last two from 19-foot range, to end an 8-0 run and put the Seers up 56-42 after the Pilots pulled within six.

Michael Fisher sparked the Steers off the bench with 10 points. Jamal Robertson recorded 12 points and three assists for the Steers while Eddren McCain dished out eight assists.

“It’s a big win but we made it closer than it had to be because we started trying things,” Norfleet said. “We’re going to be in a dogfight every time we get on the floor. We’re looking to get better and stay the course.”

Women

Nationally-ranked LSU-Shreveport survived a scare, shaking free of TC in the second half for an 80-77 win.

TC led by eight after Keyara Criner (21 points) canned a jumper for a 34-26 lead late in the first half.

The Lady Pilots posted 25 of the next 35 points to get control.

TC led by two with less than six minutes left after a free throw by Ashli Smith (13 points). LSU-Shreveport responded with eight straight points to put the game out of reach.

Sharde Henry hit for a team-high 19 points to pace LSU-S. Christy Willis, Victoria Smith and Jenna Diakos drained 17 points apiece to round out the Lady Pilots attack.

Sekeya Roberson recorded 18 points and eight assists for the Lady Steers.
