Apaches roll to win

Tyler Junior College, using a balanced scoring attack, completed a sweep in the Jimmy Butler Classic on Saturday at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

TJC (6-1) scored a 110-58 win over Texas Wesleyan JV on Saturday. On Friday, the Apaches downed Texas Southern JV, 96-71.

DeAndre Harris, Winslo Barry and Dale Jones each hit for 15 points to pace the Apaches.

Ta’Jon Welcome (13), Chris Samuel (11) and Todd Eaglin (10) were also in double figures for TJC.

Dominique Chambers and Garrett Hawley led the Rams with 14 points apiece. Ricardo Ucuahamba added 12 points.

The Apaches open Region XIV Conference play on Tuesday, traveling to Port Arthur to meet Lamar State. Tipoff is 7 p.m.

Marquis said the two games over the weekend helped prepare the Apaches.

“I think we were pleased that we played back-to-back nights so hard,” TJC coach Mike Marquis said. “We really played well; we passed the ball well and thought we rebound pretty well.

“We know the conference is going to be really difficult when we open up. … We have a high level of confidence now.”

SMOKE SIGNALS — Former Whitehouse High School and TJC standout Mitch Marquis is attending Texas Wesleyan and is a student assistant coach. … Former Lon Morris College assistant Ricky Dotson is assistant coach for the Rams. ... The Apache Ladies fell to Hill College, 62-60, on Saturday in Hillsboro. The Apache Ladies play against Mountain View at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Dallas. ... The Apaches return home on Nov. 23-24 for the Kurt Looby Classic.

Houston Community College-Northeast, Kilgore College and the Antigua national team are scheduled to play.
