Apaches stop Northwestern State JV

With the conference opener looming, Apaches coach Mike Marquis wanted his team to start clicking.

Although an undermanned Northwestern State JV squad was the opponent, Tyler Junior College looked sharp with a 90-34 victory before 500 fans at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

All 11 Apaches who suited up scored with Sharife Sargeant leading the way with 16 points. Also in double figures were Anthony Odunsi (12), Ta’Jon Welcome (11), Dale Jones (11) and Winslo Barry (10).

High-scoring DeAndre Harris did not dress for the game after “a slight neck injury” Marquis said. The TJC coach said Harris will return for this weekend’s Jimmy Butler Classic.

“I was pleased everyone got to play about even minutes; and I thought we shared the ball well,” said Marquis, whose club improves to 4-1. “We had a terrific crowd — I love our students. It is so exciting for them to come over and be at the game; and the cheerleaders and the Belles. It was a good atmosphere for a Tuesday night preseason game.”

The Demons were led by Austin Adams’ 18 points. He also had seven rebounds.

Jones led TJC with 11 boards, while Sargeant and Barry had eight apiece.

The Apaches jumped out to an 18-0 lead and rolled to the win.

TJC hosts the Jimmy Butler Classic Friday and Saturday. It is named for the former Apache who plays for the Chicago Bulls.

The Apaches meet Texas Southern JV at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Texas Wesleyan JV at 3 p.m. Saturday.

TJC opens Region XIV Conference play on Tuesday at Lamar State-Port Arthur.
